Field hockey picked third in preseason poll
A preseason CAA coaches poll has the Northeastern field hockey team slated to finish third in the conference, behind traditional powerhouses James Madison and Old Dominion. Senior midfielder Ashley Bascetta and back Jillian Wilkes will lead a talented Husky squad as they look to climb in the conference rankings.

Okland named preseason All-CAA
Lars Okland of the men's soccer team was named to the CAA preseason All-Conference team on defense. Okland, a 2008 captain, started all 19 games last year and was the anchor of a very strong defensive squad leading to his first All-CAA first team selection. Okland will lead the Huskies at Louisville in the team's season opener on Aug. 30.

Rhodes named men's hoops assistant coach
John Rhodes has been named an assistant coach for the men's basketball team, head coach Bill Coen announced Wednesday. Rhodes joins Northeastern from Ohio University, where he was associate head coach of the Bobcats. Rhodes brings 12 years of coaching experience to the Huskies. He also played professional basketball in Europe for eight years. Rhodes and the Huskies are preparing for their trip to Canada, where they will play seven exhibition games from Aug. 22-Sept. 3.

Walsh wins Olympic bronze
Former Northeastern men's crew team members Dan Walsh and Marshall Godschalk competed in Olympic medal races on Sunday in Beijing. Walsh won a bronze medal after the United States heavyweight eight crew finished third in the A-Final. Walsh's boat finished with a time of 5:25.34, behind winner Canada and runner-up Great Britain. Godschalk, rowing for the Netherlands, finished in sixth in the lightweight four finals, finishing with a time of 5:54.06. Walsh, an eight-year member of the U.S. Senior National team, rowed for Northeastern from 1998-2002 while Godschalk rowed for Northeastern from 2004-07.

Northover in Olympic shot put
Zara Northover became the first Northeastern University alumna to compete in women's track & field at the Olympic Games on Saturday morning when she threw the shot put, placing 16th in her flight. Northover, who represents Jamaica, threw for the women's track team from 2002-07. Northover's second throw of 15.85 meters (52'0) was her best of the competition. Northover qualified for the Olympics with her career-best throw of 17.56 meters (57'7.25) on June 8.

Football names 2008 team captains
Seniors Craig Kenney, Brian Mandeville, Cord Parks, and Corey Thomas of the football team were named team captains for the 2008 season, head coach Rocky Hager announced Saturday at the team's annual preseason scrimmage and barbecue in Winchendon, Mass. The Huskies will wrap up camp on Aug. 20 and begin preparations for their season-opening game at Ball State in Muncie, Ind. on Thursday, Aug. 28.
