Football takes 48-14 loss to Ball State
The football team opened the 2008 season with a 48-14 loss to Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Ball State on Thursday night in Muncie, Ind. The Huskies got on the board with a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Greg Abelli and a passing TD from John Sperrazza to Conor Gilmartin-Donohue. Kicker Mat Johnson was successful on both PATs. Defensively, Phil Higgins led NU with nine tackles. Northeastern will be back in action Sept. 13 when the Huskies take on Georgia Southern in Statesboro, Ga. at 6 p.m.

Volleyball at USF Invitational
The volleyball team will open the 2008 season at the USF Invitational in Tampa Fla. on Friday against Eastern Kentucky at 5 p.m. Nine-year head coach Ken Nichols returns 11 players from last year’s team. NU is led by captain Lauren DeTurk who was named to the preseason All-CAA team. Also returning is the 2007 CAA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Tittl. The Huskies will play three games in Tampa this weekend.

Men's hoops downs Ottawa, 79-57
In the second game of a seven-game tour in Canada, the men's basketball team knocked off the University of Ottawa 79-57 Wednesday night in Ottawa, Ontario. Juniors Matt Janning and Manny Adako each scored 15 points for NU. The Husky defense held Ottawa to just three points in the third quarter. The Huskies next play defending Canadian national champ Carleton University Thursday at 7 p.m. Team manager Matthew Holt has been keeping a trip update.

NU's first home game Friday
The women's soccer team hosts Northeastern's first home sports contest of the year when the Huskies take on Manhattan College on Friday at 6 p.m. at Parsons Field. The Huskies are led by five seniors, including co-captains Emilee Ellison and Brenna Matthews. Head coach Ed Matz is in his 10th season leading the team and has added 13 newcomers to the attack for 2008. The Huskies host St. Francis (Pa.) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will have live web video on GoNU.TV.

Field hockey opens at home Saturday
The field hockey team hosts Northwestern for its first game of the season on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Sweeney Field. The Huskies have a young squad led by senior co-captains Ashley Bascetta and Jillian Wilkes. Bascetta is a preseason All-CAA selection after earning All-CAA second team honors last year. NU was picked third in the CAA coaches poll released last week. Saturday's game will have live web video on GoNU.TV.

WRBB launches new sports site
WRBB Radio, Northeastern's student radio station, has launched a new web site, WRBBsports.com, which will offer extensive coverage of Northeastern Athletics in addition to the station's current radio coverage. WRBB Sports produces over 300 hours of NU sports coverage each year on 104.9 FM and on the web, and the station is adding new programming and web content this year.

Three Huskies in the Olympics
Dan Walsh and Marshall Godschalk, both former rowers on the men's crew team, competed in Olympic medal races on Aug. 17 in Beijing. Walsh won a bronze medal after the United States heavyweight eight crew finished third in the A-Final behind winner Canada and runner-up Great Britain. Godschalk, rowing for the Netherlands, finished in sixth in the lightweight four final. Former women's track team member Zara Northover competed in the shot put for Jamaica on Aug. 16, placing 16th in her flight. She was NU's first female representative to the Summer Olympics.
