Massachusetts 2, Northeastern 1
The Huskies (12-6) got on the board by manufacturing a run in the last of the third. Jeff Heriot led off with a bunt single and Brad Czarnowski reached on a fielder's choice when Heriot was forced out at second. Czarnowski stole second, moved to third on Omar Pena's ground-out, and scored on a wild pitch by UMass starter Mike Crane.
Crane pitched very well, working out of several jams. The Huskies loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with one out. Miguel Paquette and Erik Hagstrom singled followed by Colin Gaynor, who was hit by a pitch. But, Crane got Jonathan Kahn to bounce back to the mound and forced Paquette at the plate for the second out. Jeff Heriot then was called out on strikes to end the threat. The Huskies also had a good scoring chance in the sixth with runners on first and second and just one away. Again, Crane escaped unscathed, striking out Kahn and Heriot to end the inning.
Crane pitched 7 1/3 innings, scattering nine hits and striking out six. Matt Cavallaro relieved Hedrick in the fifth and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Friedman Diamond (Brookline, MA)Northeastern had several good scoring chances, but Massachusetts held on for a 2-1 win in a non-conference game at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies had runners at first and second with one out in the last of the ninth, but reliever Keith Doherty struck out Brad Czarnowski and Omar Pena to end the game. NU left 10 runners on base. Doherty worked the final 1 1/3 innings to record his first save of the season.
UMass (10-15) got two runs off NU starter Justin Hedrick in the top of the second. Jeff Altieri led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cullan Maumus. Tim Klett then delivered the first run of the game, doubling home Altieri. Klett stole third and then scored on Adam Stojanowski's ground-out to make it 2-0.
