| 2002 Schedule/Results Connecticut 6, Northeastern 3
Junior catcher Tyler Stefkovich singled to drive in pinchrunner Michael Tripaldi with the go-ahead run and Cy Hess later delivered a two-RBI double to make it 6-3. Mike Leonard started the rally with a one-out single. Mike McDonough then hit a routine grounder to third baseman Nick Graves, whose throw was dropped by first baseman Jonathan Kahn. That set the stage for Stefkovich, who knocked home the winning run with a single to right center. A bunt by Jon Gorrie moved Stefkovich to second and Hess then doubled in two runs to complete the game's scoring. Reliever Bob Barton got the NU Huskies in order in the ninth, striking out the final two batters to end the game.
Again, the host Huskies had their chances. NU fell behind 3-0, but came back.
Jeff Heriot tied the game with an opposite field homer to left off UConn starter Erik Drown to lead off the last of the eighth. The Huskies then loaded the bases with no one out, but Barton worked out of the jam to preserve the 3-3 tie. Mike Steinberg greeted Barton with a single through the right side and then Omar Pena bunted and reached when third baseman Dan Trubia was handcuffed by the bouncing ball. With men on first and second, NU's Luke Carlin bunted back to Barton who dropped the ball, another error that produced a bases-loaded situation. Barton escaped unscathed as two runners were forced at the plate on grounders by Miguel Paquette and Ben Beck, followed by a swinging strikeout by Kahn.
UConn got on the board in the top of the first, executing a perfect double steal. Peter Soteropoulos broke for second and drew a throw from Carlin to second baseman Erik Hagstrom. Meanwhile, Brett Burnham started scampering home from third and beat the wide return throw from Hagstrom. The visiting Huskies tacked on two more in the third, aided by a throwing error by NU starter Matt Cavallaro. Stefkovich led off with a single and Gorrie followed by bouncing a potential double-play ball back to Cavallaro, but his throw sailed into centerfield. Hess produced a run with sac fly and Soteropoulos had an RBI single to make it 3-0.
NU loaded the bases in its half of the third with one out, but Pena bounced into a double play to end the threat. Coach Neil McPhee's team cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the seventh. Paquette walked and Carlin singled and both would come around to score on wild pitches by Drown.
Cavallaro went the distance and pitched well, allowing just eight hits and striking out a career-high nine batters. He surrendered just two earned runs.
