| 2002 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Stony Brook 1
Redshirt freshman Jeff Heriot was the hero for the Huskies for the second time on the day. In the fist game, his single in the bottom of the seventh plated the winning run in a come-from-behind 6-5 NU victory. Now in the second game of the day, Heriot broke a 1-1 tie with a walk-off home run to open the eighth inning. It was his fourth homer of the season.
The win improves NU's record to 21-16, 9-9 in America East, while Stony Brook falls to 22-17, 7-7 in America East. The game took only 1:42 to play as the teams were held to just eight combined hits and only two walks.
Freshman Devin Monds took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. He pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, one run (0 earned), while striking out eight. Kevin Willi also tossed a complete game, giving up four hits and two earned runs.
After a 1-2-3 top of the first by Monds, the Huskies came out and got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning. Brad Czarnowski was hit by a pitch to open the inning. He moved to third on an Omar Pena single to left and scored when Luke Carlin hit into a fielder's choice.
Monds set down the first six batters he faced. He then walked Andrew Larsen to open the third. Larsen moved to second when Corey Johnson grounded back to Monds. The with the hit and run on, RJ Etzel grounded to third. But Nick Graves' throw pulled Ben Beck off the bag and the throw bounced on the turf away from Beck, allowing Larsen to score all the way from second to tie the game. From that point on, the pitchers dominated.
Monds then set down the next eight batters he faced. Then with one out in the sixth, Dwayne Whitaker singled past Pena at short for the Seawolves first hit of the game. He was quickly erased as Luke Carlin threw him trying to steal second. It would be the first of several big plays for Carlin.
In the seventh, Lee Lipschutz opened the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Rob Sandora. Stony Brook had men at first and second with nobody out in a 1-1 game. But Carlin then caught Lipschutz leading too far away from the bag at second, and picked him off with a strong throw from behind the plate. Monds then struck out Ed Kull and got Larsen to fly to center to end the inning.
But Monds got himself in another jam to open the eighth. Stony Brook put runners at first and third with nobody out to begin the inning. Johnson doubled to start the inning and was replaced with a pinch runner in Mark Taormina. Etzel advanced Taormina to third with a single, brining Rich Graham to the plate. Graham squared to bunt, but pulled the bat back at the last minute. Carlin saw Taormina move too far down the third base line and caught the Stony Brook player in a run down. Taormina was eventually tagged out by third baseman Nick Graves. Monds then stuck out Graham and then Whitaker flied out to center to end the threat.
Stony Brook would not get another chance as Heriot ended the game with his solo shot on the second pitch he saw from Walli in the eighth.
The same two teams will be back in action on Sunday with another doubleheader at Friedman Diamond, beginning at 1 p.m. 2002 Northeastern Baseball
