Athletic trainer Ben Miller looks at the injured left hand of Ben Beck. He had to leave the game in the fifth inning after going 1-3 with an RBI.
Freshman Devin Monds scattered four hits as third-seeded Northeastern defeated second-seeded Vermont, 5-1, in the first game of the America East Baseball Championship at Mahaney Diamond. Monds (5-2) struck out nine and walked four in the complete-game effort.

The Huskies, 28-20, scored three times in the top of the first inning off Vermont starter Brian Robinson (6-4). Brad Czarnowski led off with a single up the middle and, following a strikeout, Luke Carlin walked. Ben Beck then doubled down the left field line to score Czarnowski. Nick Graves walked to load the bases and Miguel Paquette singled to center field to score Carlin and Beck.

Robinson made quick work of the Huskies in a 5-2 win over NU last Friday in Burlington, Vt., throwing just 64 pitches in a complete-game seven-inning win. He had thrown 64 pitches by the second inning in the playoff opener as the Huskies got to him early.

Vermont got its only run of the game in the fourth inning when Raymond Montanez delivered a sacrifice fly to score Barry Chamberland, who had singled and moved to third on a double by Jeff Tarigo. Monds then struck out Derek Root to end the rally.

Northeastern added a run in the fifth inning when Carlin doubled to score Omar Pena, who had led off the inning with a triple. The fifth inning also was costly for the Huskies as Beck injured his hand on a swing. He stayed in the game after having the hand taped and grounded out to second, but he was replaced in the bottom of the inning by freshman Colin Gaynor.

The Huskies made it 5-1 in the seventh inning on a single by Gaynor to score Pena, who had singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

It was Monds' second straight win over Vermont. He threw a complete game against the Catamounts in a 3-1 win last Friday to give the Huskies a split of a doubleheader and clinch a spot in the playoffs. Monds, who led the conference with a 1.93 ERA in the regular season, has now allowed just two earned runs in his last 31 innings.

Northeastern is now 7-0 all-time against Vermont in the America East playoffs. NU advances to the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament to face the winner of tonight's Maine-Stony Brook game at 3:30 on Friday. Vermont, 27-21, plays the loser of the Maine-Stony Brook game Friday at noon.
