ORONO, Maine - Maine rallied to win two games over Northeastern on the final day of the conference playoffs to win the 2002 America East Championship. The Black Bears, coming from the loser's bracket, needed to win two games over NU in the double-elimination tournament. They won game one 8-2 and then grabbed a 7-1 lead in the title game before holding on for a 7-5 win.
Maine, behind a complete game five-hitter by freshman Paul Bruder, forced the seventh game with an 8-2 win in the first contest of the day. Bruder struck out a career-high 11 in his first collegiate complete game.
Maine improved to 40-15 with its fourth straight win. It is the fourth time in program history that the Black Bears have reached the 40-win mark. Northeastern finished the season at 29-22.
Maine freshman righthander Scott Robinson, pitching for the third time in the tournament, started the final game and allowed just two runs in six innings to earn the win in the championship. Robinson also pitched in Maine’s tournament-starting loss to Stony Brook, and in Friday night’s win over Stony Brook. He scattered six hits, struck out four and walked three to improve to 4-1. Sophomore Mike Collar struck out the potential winning run in Northeastern’s Colin Gaynor in the bottom of the ninth to seal Maine’s win and earn his first career save.
With the Huskies down 7-2, Brad Czarnowski started the ninth when he reached on a passed ball after striking out. Omar Pena followed with a single to left and All-Tournament catcher Luke Carlin loaded the bases with a perfect bunt single. Miguel Paquette plated the first run of the inning with a fielder’s choice, erasing Carlin at second, but scoring Czarnowski to make it 7-3. Erik Hagstrom followed with sacrifice fly to left, knocking in Pena. Jeff Heriot walked to put runners on first and second after pinch-runner Diego Garcia had stolen second base.
Maine replaced reliever Ryan Harris with Collar, who took the loss in Thursday’s tournament-opening game and was making just his second relief appearance of the season. NU’s Nick Graves greeted Collar with a single to right, scoring Garcia and sending Heriot to third. With the score 7-5 and two runners on base, Collar struck out Northeastern’s next batter, Gaynor, to end the game. Gaynor looked at three straight strikes from Collar.
The Black Bears built a 7-1 lead on two runs in the third, four in the fourth, and one in the seventh. A two-run, two-out single in the third by tournament Most Outstanding Player Brett Ouellette erased a 1-0 Northeastern edge, which shortstop Omar Pena had provided with a first-inning homer. Ouellette batted .381 in the tournament and knocked in a pair of runs in both games Saturday.
All-Tournament third baseman Joe Drapeau led off the fourth inning with a solo home run, his second blast of the day and 11th of the season. Aaron Izaryk and Mike Ross, both All-Tournament selections, then walked. Northeastern replaced starter Matt Cavallaro (2-3) with Matt Piryk. The freshman righty was then victimized by one of three NU errors in the game when Jesse Carlton knocked in Izaryk on an error by the Huskies’ third baseman Nick Graves as the grounder went under his glove into left field. Mike Ferriggi advanced Carlton and Ross over to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Mike Livulpi, another Maine All-Tournament outfielder, singled to right, scoring Ross to give Maine a 5-1 lead. Maine’s Aaron Young gave the Black Bears a 6-1 lead when Pena fielded his grounder and threw wildly to home, allowing Carlton to score.
In the day’s first game, Ouellette and Drapeau each hit two-run home runs in the first inning to give UMaine a 4-0 lead. An error and RBI hits by Izaryk and Ross led to three more runs for Maine in the third and a 7-0 lead. Izaryk and Drapeau each had three hits in Maine’s 15-hit attack.
