The home of the Huskies had long been a multisurfaced park with natural grass in the infield and the artificial turf of the adjacent football field cutting through the outfield. But thanks to an offseason resurfacing, the entire baseball field is now AstroPlay, a unique artificial surface that has the look and feel of grass.
It didn't take long for the Huskies and their fans to start enjoying the new surroundings. NU jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles by Jonathan Kahn and Brad Czarnowski. Three errors helped lead to a 10-run Husky outburst the next inning and the rout was on.
Nick Graves was 3-5 in the game and had a big hit in the third, tripling home new second baseman Erik Hagstrom, who had reached on an error. Czarnowski (2-4) delivered his second RBI single to plate Graves as the Huskies were on their way to batting around in the third.
The visiting Pioneers didn't help starter Mark Suchowiecki. With the bases loaded, Suchowiecki induced a ground ball to third baseman Anthony Mantovani off the bat of Omar Pena, but Mantovani's throw home pulled catcher Jack Montague off the plate and Kahn scored. The next play was a repeat of the situation as Ben Beck bounced a grounder to second baseman Joe Grillo, whose wide throw home allowed Czarnowski to score. Luke Carlin (2-4) continued the damage, knocking a two-run single to make it 10-0. Hagstrom and Graves added RBI singles to complete the double-figure inning. Of the 10 runs only three were earned.
Sophomore righty Jordy Thomson was in cruise control with the big cushion and rolled through six strong innings, allowing just five hits and two earned runs. Bryan Tierney, Matt Cavallaro and Justin Hedrick each pitched a scoreless inning to close out C.W. Post.
UMass transfer Jeff Heriot completed the NU scoring in the seventh with a two-run homer to right.
The Huskies and Pioneers will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
