Holy Cross 6, Northeastern 4 (8 inn.)
April 2, 2003
Friedman Diamond (Brookline, MA)

Holy Cross overcame a 3-0 deficit and rallied for a 6-4 win over Northeastern to spoil the Huskies’ home opener on a cold and rainy afternoon at Friedman Diamond. The game was mired by a 29-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth inning and was called after eight due to darkness.

The Huskies (4-7) went into the delay up 3-0, but the Crusaders (4-11) took control after the tarps came off. Holy Cross got on the board in the fourth with a two-out RBI single from Tom Potvin and then took the lead in the fifth. Dan Powers started the uprising with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Mike Marron. Joe McCabe produced the first run of the inning with a sacrifice fly before Marron came home to tie the game on a triple by Bill Andruskevich. Mike Schell gave Holy Cross a 4-3 edge when his fly out plated Andruskevich.

Brad Czarnowksi hit an inside the park homer in the fifth to tie the game 4-4. Potvin got a glove on Czarnowski's blast to centerfield but it bounced out and rolled all the way to the wall.

Matt McEvoy led off the sixth with a solo homer to give the Crusaders the lead for good and chase NU starter Matt Piryk. Jim Madison came on and yielded a single to Potvin, who moved up on a wild pitch. The Huskies had a chance to get an out on the basepaths when Brian Nutting fielded a grounder near the third base bag, but he couldn’t apply the tag and Potvin slid in safely, while Marron reached on a fielder’s choice.

Marron took off for a steal of second and induced a throw from NU catcher Matt Morizio to second baseman Erik Hagstrom, who couldn’t get the ball out of his glove as Potvin broke for home. The Huskies completed a rundown and retired Marron, but not before Potvin scored to make it a 6-4 Holy Cross lead.

The Huskies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on a two-run, two-out blast by Nutting in the first inning. With his first career homer, Nutting drove in Arman Sidhu, who had doubled. NU extended the edge to 3-0 in the third as Czarnowski led off with a double, moved to second on a fly out by Chris Emanuele and came home on a sacrifice fly by Sidhu.

John Dibble went the distance for the Crusaders, improving to 1-3. He allowed six hits in eight innings with six strikeouts.

NU returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Vermont, the first conference games for both teams.
