| 2003 Schedule/Results Northeastern 3, Indiana 2 (8 inn.)
NU, the home team on the scoreboard, led the entire game until Indiana rallied to tie it 3-3 and put the go-ahead run on first base with one out in the top of the ninth. Because the ninth inning was still in progress when the rain hit, by rule the game was reverted to the last completed inning (eighth).
Northeastern took the lead in the bottom of the first with a single run. Husky leadoff man Chris Emanuele singled and went to third on a one-out single by Omar Pena. Emanuele came home with the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Miguel Paquette. The Huskies followed with another run in the second. Brad Czarnowski led off with a bunt single and then moved to second on a throwing error by IU freshman pitcher Derek Hibbs, who was attempting to pick him off at first base. Czarnowski advanced to third on a ground out to the second baseman and then came home when Arman Sidhu reached on a fielder’s choice.
Indiana tallied its first run off NU starter Justin Hedrick in the top of the third. With one out, shortstop Seth Bynum walked and was pushed up to third after leftfielder Mark Calkins banged a single to left field. Centerfielder Brad DeStefano drove a base hit up the middle and collected an RBI as Bynum scored. Northeastern strung together three base hits to score another run in the third. With runners on first and second, Jeff Heriot doubled to left to score Paquette.
In the top of the sixth with NU up 3-1, the Hoosiers inched closer with another run. Designated hitter Nick Evans drew a walk and came home on first baseman Kevin Mahar’s two-out double to the wall in right field to bring Indiana within a run. Kevin O’Brien, who had relieved Hibbs in the third, stifled the NU offense and finished with seven strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings of work.
It began to rain in the eighth inning and continued as the Hoosiers came to bat in the top of the ninth. IU had knotted the game at three runs apiece and had a runner on first with one out when it began to pour. The field was quickly soaked and the game had to be called.
Hedrick was the winner on the mound. In eight innings, he scattered six hits and fanned 10 Hoosier batters while walking just two. Hibbs was tagged with the loss for Indiana, his first of the season. The rookie gave up six hits and two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings pitched.
