| 2003 Schedule/Results Northeastern 11, Centenary 3
NU exploded in the third and fourth innings, scoring five runs in each frame. Freshman Arman Sidhu led off the third with a single. Mike Steinberg walked and Brad Czarnowski reached on a fielder's choice when Centenary starter David Ruffing tried unsuccessfully to get Sidhu out on a play at third. Freshman Chris Emanuele followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sidhu. Jeff Heriot (2-5, two RBIs) then hit a two-run triple to center, plating Steinberg and Czarnowski. Heriot scored when Omar Pena followed with a double. Matt Morizio wrapped up the Husky scoring in the third by driving in Pena with a double of his own to put Northeastern up 6-2.
The Husky bats stayed hot in the fourth, as Sidhu led off with a blast to left field for his second home run of the season. Steinberg walked and Czarnowski moved him to second with a single. After a double steal, Emanuele knocked in Steinberg with a base hit. Tim Bush then reached on a fielder's choice that brought home Czarnowski. Pena (3-4, three RBIs) followed with his team-leading fifth home run of the season and extended NU's cushion to 11-2.
Centenary opened the scoring in the top of the first when Patrick Beale homered down the left field line off NU starter Matt Piryk. The Huskies answered the call in the bottom half of the inning though. Steinberg led off with a double and advanced to third when the Centenary first baseman couldn't handle a Czarnowski ground ball. Steinberg came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Emanuele (1-3, three RBIs) to tie the game 1-1.
The Centenary power surge continued in the second inning when J.W. Pate hit a shot almost identical to Beale's down the left field line, putting the Gents up 2-1. Piryk settled down after that and sent Centenary down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
The Gents added one more run in the top of the seventh inning when J.C. Biagi hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, scoring Tony Cardone to make it 11-3.
Piryk scattered five hits and gave up three runs over eight innings, while freshman Tony Humeniuk made his first collegiate appearance, pitching a scoreless ninth inning in a non-save situation.
NU hosts Binghamton for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday to wrap up the regular season. The Huskies need to win two of the four games to qualify for the America East Tournament May 22-24 in Burlington, Vt.
