Northeastern 5, Binghamton 1 (game 2)
May 17, 2003
Friedman Diamond (Brookline, MA)

Northeastern completed a four-game weekend series sweep over Binghamton with a 5-1 win in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Friedman Diamond. Sophomore Jim Madison pitched a complete-game two-hitter for the Huskies. The win wraps up the Huskies' regular season.

As he did in the first game of the doubleheader, freshman Chris Emanuele homered in bottom of the first inning, which gave NU an early 1-0 lead.

NU gave Madison all the run support he would need in the bottom of the third inning. The hero of game one, Mike Steinberg, led off the inning with a single up the middle. After a fly out, Emanuele walked and combined on a double steal with Steinberg to put runners on second and third with two outs. Sophomore Jeff Heriot then extended NU's lead with a single to right that scored Emanuele and Steinberg. Miguel Paquette followed with a single to right, putting runners on first and second. Freshman Arman Sidhu (2-3, RBI) continued the hit parade by lining a double off the base of the left field fence to bring around Heriot (2-3, two RBIs) and make it 4-0.

Madison did not give up a hit until the top of the fourth when Jay Balback led off the inning with a towering homer to left field to cut NU's lead to 4-1.

Tim Bush took the first pitch of the bottom of the fifth and hammered it deep over the left field wall for his third home run of the season to give the Huskies their last run of the day and a 5-1 advantage.

Madison picked up the win on the mound, going the distance, to even his record at 3-3. The sophomore benefited from inducing the Bearcats into 10 ground ball outs. Jacob Thiel took the loss for Binghamton, pitching the first five innings and giving up all five runs. The Huskies end the regular season with a 24-21 overall record and a 12-10 mark in America East action. NU will now travel to Burlington, Vt. to take part in the America East Championship on Thursday. The Huskies clinched the fourth seed and will play the top seed of the tournament, which will be either Vermont or Maine, who are playing this weekend.
