Stony Brook 11, Northeastern 10
2003 America East Championship
May 24, 2003
Centennial Field (Burlington, VT)

Northeastern lost a 7-1 lead and fell to Stony Brook 11-10 in the first game of the America East Championship final round on Saturday afternoon in Burlington, Vt. Both teams used the long ball, but the Seawolves hit the last one that proved to be the difference. NU entered the day without a loss in the double-elimination tournament, so a win would have given the Huskies the title and NCAA bid. Instead, the Seawolves rallied to force a decisive second and final game.

In the bottom half of the sixth inning with NU up 10-7, Lee Lipschutz hit a grand slam for his second round-tripper of the afternoon. NU reliever Jim Madison gave up a single and a pair of walks to load the bases before giving way to Tim Bush. On an 0-2 count, Lipschutz took the Bush offering and hit a grand slam to left field, giving the Seawolves the final 11-10 margin.

The Huskies got on the board in the top of the first when leadoff hitter Mike Steinberg walked and freshman Arman Sidhu followed with a double to left-center, putting runners on second and third. With one out, Tim Bush stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to right, deep enough to bring home Steinberg for NU’s first run.

Stony Brook evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Matt Devins singled up the middle off NU starter Devin Monds. David Wood followed with a single to right and Devins moved to third on an error by Jeff Heriot in center. Cole Cicatelli then hit and RBI single to center, scoring Devins. Monds avoided further damage by getting Mike Russo looking to end the inning.

NU opened it up, scoring three runs in both the second and third innings. Omar Pena led off the second with his sixth home run of the year to left-center. Miguel Paquette followed with a single to right and Brad Czarnowski hit a one-out, two-run blast down the right field line to make it 4-1.

In the top of the third, Chris Emanuele was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With one out, Heriot walked and advanced along with Emanuele on a balk by Stephen Zydor. After Pena lined out to the third baseman, Paquette (2-5, three RBIs) hit the third NU homer of the day to right-center, a three-run blast to put the Huskies up 7-1.

Monds ran into trouble in the bottom half of the fourth as the Seawolves scored five in the inning, all with two outs, to cut the deficit to 7-6. Russo led off with a walk and with two outs Ed Kull doubled to right, putting runners on second and third. Jim McCurdy then laced a double that snuck underneath the glove of Czarnowski in left, scoring both Russo and Kull. Andrew Larsen followed with a triple to right that scored McCurdy to make it 7-4. Devins ended the Stony Brook surge, which sent nine men to the plate, by hitting a two-run homer to left-center.

Stony Brook knotted the score in the fifth, as Lee Lipschutz hit a solo home run off Monds to right-center with one out.

The Huskies got the bats going again in the top of the sixth. Czarnowski was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Steinberg laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Czarnowski into scoring position and he then went to third on a wild pitch. Sidhu walked and Emanuele struck out, bringing up Bush. With two outs, Bush put the Huskies back up 10-7 with a three-run shot to left-center.

NU hurt its cause by committing six errors in the game. Bush took the loss on the mound and falls to 2-3, after going the final two and 2/3 innings of play. Monds went four and a 1/3, giving up seven earned runs, while Madison pitched an inning and allowed three runs.
