Starter Jordan Thomson struck out eight batters in seven innings, earning the win. Jeff Heriot (2-5, 2 RBI) and Chris Emanuele (1-4, 2 runs) led NU offensively.
The Huskies scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second. Heriot hit a line drive to get aboard and then advanced on a ground out by Miguel Paquette. Matt Morizio brought him home with a single to right-center. NU added another run in the top of the third inning. Bush singled in Emanuele for the score.
Northeastern loaded the bases to start the fifth inning. Heriot just missed one, hitting a high popup to the shortstop. Paquette then came in and hit a sac-fly to right field that scored Emanuele. Morizio hit a fly-ball to center to end the inning. Thomson followed by striking out the side in order in the bottom of the inning.
The Huskies scored their final two runs in the seventh inning. Paul Koslowski walked, then got to third on two passed balls. Bush followed with a walk, setting up runners on first and third for Heriot. Heriot responded by punching a double into left-center that scored Koslowski and Bush, giving NU a 5-0 lead.
But Valpo wouldn't go away, scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Collin Reynolds singled and Michael Arensdorff scored on an error. Arman Sidhu then bobbled a ball off the bat of Ryan Mantai and Reynolds scored. Pinch hitter Keith Keslinke singled to left, putting runners on first and second. Brian Rzepka followed with a singled to right center that scored Manthei. Rzepka then got caught between second and third by Thomson, and second baseman Garret Chin threw out Keslinke as he tried to score.
Valpo continued to rally in the eighth inning. Jeff Rickert doubled and Edward Hannan bunted for a hit to start the inning. Crusader Kevin Kutansky batted in Rickert with a single to right field.
Thomson pitched two perfect innings to begin the game. He was aided by Brad Czarnowski, who made a hard-charging catch in left field to end the first inning. Thomson struck out two batters in the second. Valpo got two singles, putting men on first and second with two outs in the third inning, but Thomson picked off Crusader Tyler Lowell at second base to end the threat.
