Northeastern 15, George Mason 10
May 18, 2006
Spuhler Field (Fairfax, Va.)

The Northeastern baseball team opened up a 10-1 advantage on George Mason and held on to beat the Patriots 15-10 Thursday afternoon in Fairfax, Va.

With the win, the Huskies hold on to third place in the CAA, half a game ahead of UNC Wilmington and a game on top of Virginia Commonwealth.

Seniors Chris Emanuele and Jeff Maher each homered in the game for the Huskies (25-21, 17-10 CAA). Emanuele hit a three-run shot in the second inning, part of a five-run inning which put NU up 5-1. Maher hit his longball in the eighth inning.

In the fourth inning, four consecutive Husky batters reached base to bring home three runs. Senior Matt Morizio singled home two runs and freshman Mike Tamsin brought one home with a sacrifice fly.

Up 10-1 in the fifth, the Huskies allowed the Patriots (20-29, 12-16 CAA) to get back into the game. GMU scored five times in the fifth, capped by a grand slam by first baseman Scott Krieger off of Morizio.

But NU would continue to score and not let the Patriots get closer than four runs. Freshman Jeff Thomson hit a two-run single in the sixth inning. Morizio doubled home two more runs in the seventh. Maher then went deep in the eighth.

Emanuele scored three times on the day. Maher was 2-5 and also scored three runs. Morizio was 2-5 with four RBI. Senior shortstop Arman Sidhu was 3-5 with two RBI. Sophomore Mike Lyon was 2-3 with a triple, two walks and two runs.

Junior Adam Ottavino started for NU and struck out nine batters in 4-2/3 innings. He held GMU to two runs on four hits in his outing. The right-hander broke his own single-season strikeout mark in the game, passing his record of 106 set last season. He now has 114 strikeouts this year.

Morizio (2-2), despite allowing eight runs in 2-2/3 innings, received the win.

J.J. Pannell (2-5) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs on six hits in four innings.

The two teams resume the series tomorrow at 2 p.m.
