Women's Ultimate Frisbee Makes Impact in Boston Community.

The Northeastern University Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team, affectionately known as the Valkyries, has greeted the start of 2010 with a great deal of excitement. For two years running Northeastern Women's Ultimate Frisbee has finished among the top 20 teams out of approximately 300 registered teams in the nation. The Valkyries look to continue their recent success in 2010.

In addition to their anticipated successes on the field the team has decided to exert more effort off the field as a resolution for 2010 and become more involved in the community. The Valkyries ran a week-long camp for inner city girls, on their Spring Break, encouraging them to lead more active lives. The camp included participation of over 20 Boston youth and approximately 15 of our players.
The Valkyries also received an invitation this December to volunteer at Governor Deval Patrick's Holiday Gala. Four team members had a wonderful time helping usher people and singing Happy Birthday to the Governor's wife. The team was very excited to be able to take a picture with Governor Deval Patrick.

One of the biggest initiatives the team has taken on has been volunteering at the Greater Boston Food Bank. They did their first volunteer session in early December and had such a good experience that they have decided to make it a monthly event. Seven Ultimate players, out of a total of twenty six volunteers, sorted almost 6,000lbs of food, which amounted to 208 lbs of food sorted per person (the average food sorted per person during one session is 150lbs.) Each person made 160 meals possible as a team they made over 1,160 meals possible!

The Northeastern University Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team is very proud of their accomplishments on the field and in the community and hope to continue to improve upon our frisbee record and our community service as the year continues.

Halloween marked a Northeastern Club Hockey first when the Huskies faced off against ECAC East member Plymouth State University. It was the first time in club history that the Huskies have played an NCAA Varsity program. After a scoreless first period, the Huskies exploded in the second scoring 5 goals and finished the game off in the third period earning a 7-0 final. Chelsea Dietz gained her second shutout in as many games and the scoring was led by Karoline Perdios with a goal and three assists, Meredith Harclerode with two goals, freshman Lauren Mormino with two assists, defenseman Christina Pagano with two assists, and Mckenzie Powers adding two more assists.
