Notes: A strong defensive effort in the first half evolved into an aggressive offensive effort in the second half, but neither could lead the Huskies to victory in their first-round match with the Tar Heels of North Carolina. Despite the Heels' dominance in the first half, (9-0 shots, 5-1 penalty corners,) Northeastern held them to a slim 1-0 lead. The Huskies were forced to open the game up a bit more when UNC's Jana Toepel put the Heels ahead 2-0 with under 20 minutes remaining. Although they were able to earn four penalty corners and force UNC goalkeeper Nicole Frey to make four saves in the second half, the Huskies had to sacrifice defensive awareness and faced a frustrating final of 5-0. The loss brought back unwelcome memories of a 5-0 loss to Ball State in last year's first round, also at Old Dominion.
