Mari Creatini and Liane Dixon both scored two goals to give the 10th-ranked Huskies (9-2, 1-0 America East) a 6-1 win over the University of Massachusetts (2-10) on Sunday at Garber Field in Amherst, Mass.
The Huskies broke into the scoring column with three goals in less than five minutes. On the first one, Whitney Shean went down the right side and fed Creatini who was camped right in front of UMass goalie Christine Tocco. Creatini spun around and slipped the ball past Tocco to the right side. The two then hooked up again four and a half minutes later. Shean took a shot on a penalty corner which was tipped in by Creatini in front of the cage. Just 16 seconds later, Shean scored an unassisted goal to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
Northeastern put the game away with three goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half. Ashley Webber scored her second goal of the season with an assist by Jay Quinn at 38:49. Liane Dixon then netted goals at 41:30 and 51:57, respectively, to give NU a 6-0 edge. Dixon's first was unassisted while Creatini helped on the second goal.
Caitlin Beresin scored the lone UMass goal at 57:16 to make the final 6-1.
Husky goalie Diana Nelson made one save for the Huskies in 57:16 of play. Elizabeth Centofanti played the final 12:44 and didn't see any shots. Northeastern held a commanding advantage in both shots (33-5) and penalty corners (11-0).
Next up for Northeastern is a matchup against crosstown rival Harvard on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Allston.
