The 10th-ranked Huskies knocked off undefeated No. 6 Connecticut in a stroke-off after 115 minutes of scoreless competition in Storrs, Conn. Senior goalie Diana Nelson made 11 saves for Northeastern.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie over 70 regulation and 30 overtime minutes before Northeastern bested UConn 4-2 in second round of penalty strokes. The official score of the game was 1-0 in favor of NU.
The two teams finished tied in the first five-player penalty stroke period at 1-1 to force the second five-player set, which saw Northeastern connect on its first four opportunities. The clincher was provided by Sarah Eckoff, who finished 2-of-2 in the penalty stroke phase.
Eckhoff netted NU's only penalty stroke in the first round. In the second round, Northeastern connected on four strokes in a row. Jay Quinn, Mari Creatini, Lauren Edelmeier and Eckhoff sealed it for NU.
Northeastern improves to 13-2 on the season while UConn drops to 13-1.
Each team had numerous chances throughout, but kept coming away empty. As Nelson made 11 saves, UConn’s Melissa Bostwick made five.
Northeastern has two America East contests at home this weekend as it takes on Vermont on Friday at 2 p.m. and UMBC on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both games are at Sweeney Field.
