Whitney Shean scored a pair of goals as Northeastern defeated Maine 2-1 on Saturday afternoon in America East field hockey action in Orono, Maine. Northeastern finishes the regular season 15-3 overall and 5-1 in conference play to clinch the second seed in the America East tournament. The Black Bears fall to 12-5 on the season and 4-2 in America East play and will be the third seed. The teams will rematch in the first round of the tourney on Friday at MIT's Jack Barry Field in Cambridge.
Northeastern opened the scoring in the eighth minute off a penalty corner. Shean began the corner with Lauren Edelmeier and Alli Bolster stopping and passing the ball. Shean beat UMaine goalie Jamie Morin for her 11th goal of the season.
The Black Bears tied the game at 20:11 when Liz Mendell scored on a scramble in front of the Maine cage. For Mendell, it was her third goal of the season.
Shean got the game-winner at 32:58 when she scored off a rebound on a shot off a penalty corner.
Both teams had great chances in the second half with each goalie coming up with some great stops. Northeastern outshot Maine 17-10 in the game. Diana Nelson made three saves in goal for the Huskies and improves to 15-3 this season. Maine goalie Morin made eight saves in goal and falls to 12-5 this year.
The Huskies will try for their fourth-straight America East tournament title next weekend. They will take on Maine in the first round on Friday at 11:30 a.m. The winner of that game will play in the final on Sunday at 7 p.m. against top-seeded Boston University or the No. 4 seed, which has yet to be determined.
