The penalty corner trio of Whitney Shean to Natalie Singelais to Lauren Edelmeier connected for both of Northeastern's goals as the Huskies beat Maine 2-1 in the America East Tournament semifinal at Jack Barry Field in Cambridge on Friday. Edelmeier finished both plays.

It was NU's second faceoff with Maine in a week and the result was the same as last Saturday, a 2-1 Northeastern victory. The Huskies improve to 16-3 this season and will play for their fourth-straight America East title on Sunday against either Boston University of New Hampshire. Maine falls to 12-7.

I thought our team played well," said NU head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "We had enough shots and that weren't dropping for us. [Northeastern] could have gotten down but they didn't. I was proud of them. It was good hockey, good defense and good passing."

The Huskies trailed 1-0 entering the second half, but dominated the final 35 minutes. Edelmeier knotted the score at 1-1 at 40:24 on a perfectly executed penalty corner. Shean inbounded it to Singelais, who stopped it and Edelmeier shot it in.

After several scoring opportunities came up empty for NU, Edelmeier netted the game-winner at 61:31 on the exact same play. The Huskies outshot Maine 11-1 in the second half and had five penalty corners.

The Huskies controlled play for most of the first half but couldn't net a goal. The wind was against NU for the first half but the Huskies still led to shots, 16-10. Maine took a 1-0 lead at 31:00 when Rachael Hilgar grabbed her own rebound and beat Husky goalie Diana Nelson. Nelson had saves a Hilgar shot moments earlier but couldn't recover in time.

That was Nelson's only slip-up however, as she played brilliantly once again for the Huskies with six saves. Maine goalie Jamie Morin made 11 stops.

The Huskies will play in the final on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Jack Barry Field.

"Whoever wins the second game will make it a good game on Sunday," said Murtagh. "We're going to prepare ourselves the same way we did for this game. It's going to be a good competition no matter what."

Northeastern has won the America East Tournament nine times since it was first played in 1990. The Huskies have never lost an America East semifinal game and kept that streak alive on Friday. NU is 23-4 all-time in the America East Tournament.
