Mari Creatini netted a goal 10:44 into overtime to push the Huskies past Connecticut, 2-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Harvard's Jordan Field in Allston on Sunday. Creatini took a feed from Whitney Shean on the left side of the goal and shot the ball across and in for the score.

Northeastern (18-3) will play two-time defending national champ Wake Forest (17-3) in the second round of the tourney on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Jordan Field.

"It's a great win for this team, it's a great win for the program," said Husky head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "I'm really excited for this team and especially the seniors.

"UConn had a great team. We ruined their perfect season and we knew they would come out hard this time but our team stepped it up even more this time and that's exciting."

NU beat UConn, 2-1, in overtime Oct. 13 to hand Connecticut its only loss up to this point. UConn finished the season 20-2.

UConn jumped out to a 1-0 lead 2:51 into the game when Lauren Henderson netted a goal off a penalty corner.

Liane Dixon tied the game at 1-1 when she took a feed from Shean and beat UConn goalie Melissa Bostwick at 13:51. The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

NU and UConn played out a scoreless second half to send the game into overtime. With under two minutes to go, Husky goalie Diana Nelson came up with two huge saves to keep the game even.

Two minutes into overtime, UConn's Becky Helwig had a breakaway and came into the circle, but Nelson charged out and broke up the play. On a penalty corner right after, Nelson came up with a huge save on a Lizzy Peijs shot. Lauren Edelmeier broke up two dangerous plays in overtime to lead the Husky defense.

Northeastern outshot Connecticut 13-11 in the game, which was the first time UConn was outshot this season. Connecticut had the top defense in the country this season, allowing an average of 0.51 goals per game. Bostwick led the nation with a 0.515 goals against average and a .853 save-percentage.

The Huskies have played Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in three of the past four years with NU coming out on top twice.

About Sunday's game with Wake Forest, Murtagh said, "They're two-time defending national champion, so they have some experience at this. Their head coach just had a baby and is back home but they still came out and beat Harvard 7-1 today and Harvard is a good team. So we need to come out and step it up again, like we did today."
