The Huskies trounced Central Michigan, 6-1, on Saturday at the Univeristy of Michigan's Ocker Field Hockey Field in Ann Arbor. NU jumped out to a 2-0 lead and never looked back, improving to 7-1 on the season while Central Michigan dropped to an even 2-2.
Senior Mari Creatini had a huge game, collecting two goals and two assists. Whitney Shean scored a pair of goals while Liane Dixon and Jay Quinn also scored.
The Huskies struck for their first goal at 5:19 when Quinn netted one with an assist from Lauren Edelmeier. They went up 2-0 at 11:50 on a goal by Shean with an assist from Alli Bolster.
Central Michigan made it close with a goal less than five minutes later, making the score 2-1 at 16:39 on a goal from Erica Takach. But NU scored again, taking a 3-1 lead into halftime on a Creatini' s goal.
The Huskies dominated the second half, taking 17 shots on CMU goalie Sarah Mancuso, and netting three more goals. Shean, Dixon and Creatini got second-half goals. Overall, NU took 26 shots while CMU only managed 10, including just one in the second half.
NU goalie Diana Nelson made four saves in her 59:08 of play. Elizabeth Centofanti played the final 10:52 but didn't see any shots. Northeastern took 10 penalty corners in the game, scoring on one, while CMU had three penalty corners.
The Huskies last started the season 7-1 in 2002, when they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2001, NU began the season 9-1. The Huskies play Michigan on Sunday at noon.
