The No. 12 Northeastern field hockey team won its eighth game in a row, holding off a Brown comeback as the Huskies beat the Bears, 3-2, on Wednesday in Providence, R.I.
The Huskies were dominant in the first half. Lauren Edelmeier began the scoring just three minutes into the game when she scored unassisted. That lead was stretched in the 24th minute when Stephanie Casper scored her first collegiate goal to give the Huskies the 2-0 lead.
The Bears were kept off the scoreboard through halftime, but Samantha Lloyd tried to made it a game, putting Brown on the scoreboard at the 55th minute and cutting the lead to 2-1. The Huskies protected their lead, though, as Jay Quinn set up Whitney Shean for her ninth goal of the season. Shean now leads the Colonial Athletic Association with 24 points, and her nine goals are behind only teammate Ashley Webber. Lloyd scored again for the Bears in the 66th minute to make the score 3-2, but Brown could not get another shot past Husky goalkeeper Colleen Duffy, who made four saves in the game.
The Huskies outshot the Bears 21-8 in the game.
The Huskies will try to remain unbeaten in league play this weekend when they return home to host Hofstra on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Sweeney Field, then hit the road to visit reigning CAA champion Delaware on Sunday at 1 p.m.
