Michaela O'Malley scored two goals to help the Northeastern field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Hofstra on Friday at Sweeney Field. The No. 12 Huskies improve to 2-0 in the CAA and 10-1 overall after reeling off their ninth straight win, the team's longest winning streak since 1998.
"It's a very good win," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "I was glad to see us come out in the second half and play a good game." The first half was a tight, defensive affair. The Huskies only managed four shots while the Pride took just one shot. The game remained scoreless until the final four minutes of the half, when Harriet Hoyer found Whitney Shean through traffic, who connected for her sixth goal in four games.
The score remained 1-0 until the 48th minute, when the Huskies went on a five-minute run that put the game away. NU was able to convert on two penalty corners. Jay Quinn took a rebounded shot and sent it sailing into the goal to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, O'Malley shot through a crowd of players to score her first goal of the game. O'Malley stuck again in the 51st minute to score her second of the game and sixth of the season.
Goalkeeper Colleen Duffy made one save and recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career, while Pride keeper Jessica Cowperthwait made eight saves in a losing effort.
The Huskies have another CAA game on the slate Sunday when they travel to reigning CAA champion Delaware to take on the Fightin' Blue Hens at 1 p.m. They return home Wednesday to host Harvard in a non-conference tilt at Sweeney Field at 4 p.m.
