Kristin Galuski scored two early goals and Connecticut fended off a Northeastern comeback as NU dropped a 3-2 decision to UConn in the Battle of the Huskies on Wednesday.
Connecticut built an early lead, beginning in the 14th minute, when Galuski beat NU goalkeeper Colleen Duffy to give UConn the 1-0 lead. Just over a minute later, Galuski struck again, taking a pass from Laura Puddle and scoring her tenth goal of the year. UConn added to its lead at 27:25 when Meagan Hoffmann set up Jennifer Kleinhans to put Connecticut up by three. NU began to chip away at that lead two minutes later by capitalizing on a penalty corner as Whitney Shean and Natalie Singelais set up the shot for Lauren Edelmeier, who notched her eighth goal of the year to cut the UConn lead to 3-1, a score that remained through halftime.
NU tried to rally in the second half and was again successful on a penalty corner when Edelmeier's shot was deflected into the net by Shean, cutting the UConn lead to one at 51:50, but that was all the Red & Black could muster.
NU was met with a stingy Connecticut defense that only allowed two shots the entire game, both of which resulted in goals. Duffy made three saves while allowing three goals for Northeastern.
The loss drops the No. 10 Huskies of Huntington Ave. to 13-2 on the season and snaps a 12-game winning streak, which was the team's longest since a 13-game streak in 1997. The No. 14 Huskies of Storrs improve to 10-4 this year.
Northeastern faces another nationally-ranked opponent in cross-town rival No. 16 Boston College on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Sweeney Field. This weekend is Homecoming Weekend and the 1995 Final Four field hockey team will be honored at the game.
