Ashley Webber scored the game-winning goal and a spectacular defensive effort helped the Northeastern field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over William & Mary on Sunday at Sweeney Field. The win clinches a playoff berth for the Huskies in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, which will be held from Nov. 4-6 in Norfolk, Va.
The game was the final regular-season game of the year at Sweeney Field and the Huskies' two seniors, Lauren Edelmeier and Jay Quinn, were honored before the game.
"I'm glad that the kids played tough and stepped it up for Jay and Lauren," said Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "I thought the kids fought hard."
The Huskies were dominant in the first half, controlling play and not allowing a single shot from the Tribe. NU got on the scoreboard in the 24th minute when Sarah Eckhoff deflected a shot from Quinn into the goal to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead that held up through halftime.
NU bolstered its lead in the 45th minute when Webber found her way through the Tribe defense and notched her 11th goal of the season, which would prove to be the game-winner. The Tribe got one back in the 54th minute when Gina Cimarelli passed across the net to Heather Winn, who cut the Huskies' lead to 2-1.
The Huskies outshot the Tribe, 18-3. Gwen Hunter played well in net for the Tribe, making ten saves. Husky goalkeeper Colleen Duffy did not record a save, but only faced one shot on goal the entire afternoon as the Red & Black defense was strong.
The Huskies return to action Friday, when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. to take on the Rams of Virgnia Commonwealth at 6 p.m. NU has clinched a spot in the CAA Tournament, but is playing for a first-round bye, awarded to the top two teams in the conference.
