| The Northeastern field hockey team, already reeling from two consecutive losses, had its losing streak extended to three games on Friday afternoon with NU's 3-2 loss to Providence in the team's home opener at Sweeney Field.
On Friday, the Friars came out quickly to begin the game and didn't look back. Providence's Lauren Sickel scored in the opening minutes off of a penalty corner, giving the Friars an early 1-0 lead.
Northeastern upped the offensive pressure in order to get the tying goal, and the team finally broke through in the 24th minute when, after a penalty corner, junior Stephanie Casper scored after a scramble in front on the Providence net. The lead would not last long, however, as Melissa McGow scored before halftime to give the Friars a 2-1 edge headed into the second half.
The Friars extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second half, as Sickel struck again to give the visitors a two-goal advantage.
The insurance goal became very important after sophomore Ashley Bascetta scored in the 53rd minute to make it a one-goal game once again. The Huskies had many opportunities late in the game to score the equalizer, but they could not get any more goals past Providence goaltender Rachel Chamberlain and the solid Friar backline.
For the game, Chamberlain made four saves on six shots-on-goal. Northeastern's starting goalie, sophomore Colleen Duffy, allowed all three goals and made three saves before being lifted for junior Meaghan Dorsi midway through the second half. Dorsi made one save.
The Huskies hope a visit from Holy Cross on Sunday will cure the team's problems. Northeastern faces off with the Crusaders, a team that has not beaten NU since 1980, at Sweeney Field on Sunday at 2 p.m.
