In the midst of a three-game losing streak, the Holy Cross Crusaders were just the team that the Northeastern field hockey team needed to see on Sunday. Behind two goals by sophomore Ashley Bascetta, the Huskies defeated the Crusaders, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Bascetta came into the game having scored on 50 percent of her shots, and that percentage will only go up after scoring two goals on two shots Sunday. As a team, Northeastern took three shots and scored three goals.
Bascetta got the scoring started in the sixth minute off of a Husky penalty corner, which was a sign of things to come for Northeastern. Assists on her first goal were given to junior assistant captain Ashley D'Ambra and senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff.
Nearing the end of the first half, NU struck twice more on penalty corners to effectively put the game away. First, it was Bascetta again off a penalty corner, scoring in the 26th minute with assists to Eckhoff and senior Natalie Singlelais. Eckhoff got into the scoring column next, as she used a Singelais stick stop to score the team's third goal off a penalty corner by senior co-captain Whitney Shean.
Holy Cross' Tara Welch scored a goal shortly before halftime to get the Crusaders on the board, but the team was unable to mount much offensive pressure against a stingy Northeastern defense. Holy Cross registered only two shots in the game.
In her first collegiate start, Northeastern junior Meaghan Dorsi earned her first collegiate victory despite not having to make a save and giving up one goal in her 35 minutes of action. Classmate Liz Centofanti saw her first action of the season in the second half, making one save without giving up a goal. For Holy Cross, Erin Singleton gave up three goals and took the loss before ceding the net to Kelly Casey for the second half.
Northeastern will conclude its season-long three-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 16 when the team hosts the University of Massachusetts at 1 p.m. at Sweeney Field.
