After a tough beginning to the season, it appears that the worst might finally be behind the Northeastern field hockey team. The team returned its record to 3-3 on the season with a 4-2 victory over Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Several Huskies had big days against the Minutewomen, led by senior co-captain Whitney Shean. The NU forward assisted on Northeastern's first two goals, both coming in the first six minutes of play. Junior Stephanie Casper got the Huskies on the board in the third minute, scoring her fourth goal of the season off a feed from Shean. Senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff notched her fourth tally of the season less than four minutes later, off a penalty corner taken by Shean and stick-stopped by junior Ashley D'Ambra.

At the 22:02 mark, Shean got in on the scoring, tallying her first goal of the 2006 season, with an assist going to Eckhoff.

NU dominated play for most of the first half, controlling the ball and keeping the UMass goaltenders off balance and constantly busy. The Minutewomen, however, would not go away.

With six minutes remaining in the half, the visitors were awarded a penalty stroke, but it was then that junior goaltender Liz Centofanti came up big for the Huskies. Centofanti dove to her right to stop the shot of Erin O'Brien, keeping the lead at three goals for the moment. But a minute later, Cher King managed to put one by Centofanti off a penalty corner to make it a 3-1 game, giving the team some momentum headed into the second half.

UMass came out strong to begin the second half, but the Minutewomen could not turn that offensive pressure into goals. NU junior Harriet Hoyer helped to turn the tide back to Northeastern's side, as she scored her first goal of the season at the 62:24 mark off a pass from Casper and also created other scoring opportunities for the Huskies. A late UMass goal by Katelyn Orlando provided the final score of 4-2.

For the Huskies, Shean led the way offensively with four points (one goal, two assists), while Casper and Eckhoff both registered three on a goal and an assist.

Centofanti played very well in earning the win for the Huskies, making four saves on six shots, as well as the penalty stroke save. UMass' Becky Letourneau made one save on three shots before giving way to Sarah Williams at the 18:28 mark of the first half. Williams made four saves for UMass.

After three games at home, Northeastern next hits the road for two games away from Sweeney Field, beginning with a match-up with cross-town rival Boston University Friday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. at Jack Berry Field.
