Indiana's Kate O'Connell scored her ninth goal of the season 3:50 into overtime to give the No. 11 Hoosiers (13-2) a 2-1 nonconference victory over Northeastern (7-8) on Saturday afternoon at Mellencamp Pavilion.
In a hard-fought contest between two evenly-matched teams, 70 minutes was not enough to decide a winner. The first half featured a lot of back-and-forth action, as both defenses held strong. Despite heading into the break with a 5-2 shot advantage, Northeastern was unable to get a ball by IU goaltender Haley Exner.
Indiana's Rachel Telian struck first for the home team in the 56th minute, scoring her first goal of the season off a penalty corner. Assists on the goal went to Meredith Brown and Lydia Schrott.
However, the Huskies would not give up - and their efforts paid off just in time. The Huskies earned two penalty corners with time winding down, putting lots of pressure on the Indiana defense to preserve the win. With only four seconds remaining in regulation, junior assistant captain Ashley Webber finally broke the defensive wall, notching her sixth goal of the season to send the game into overtime.
Northeastern could not feed off its sudden momentum swing, however, as Indiana's Kate O'Connell redirected a cross from the left side of the net into the Husky goal, giving the home team a very tough 2-1 victory.
Junior goaltender Liz Centofanti made five saves on seven shots for the Huskies, as she sees her record drop to 5-5 on the season. Exner performed well for the home team, making eight saves in earning the victory.
The Huskies have very little time to rest, as the team returns to action tomorrow afternoon against the No. 12 Louisville Cardinals.
