Louisville's Jessica Javelet scored all three of her team's goals in the second half as the No. 12 Cardinals came back to defeat the Northeastern field hockey team, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The host Cardinals came out strong in the first half, forcing three penalty corners and taking five shots early on. The team continued to pepper Husky junior goaltender Liz Centofanti in the opening 35 minutes, forcing Centofanti to make six saves in the first half. The NU junior was up to the task, however, not allowing a goal in that period.
Instead, it was the Huskies who got the first goal. Off of a penalty corner, freshman Suzanne Hazelzet notched her fourth goal of the season after beating Louisville goalie Marie-Claire Heller to the upper right corner. Despite being outshot 8-3 and losing the penalty corner battle 6-4, NU still managed to head into halftime with a one-goal lead.
But in the second half, Louisville continued to apply pressure to the Northeastern defense. In the 44th minute, Javelet scored her team's first goal off a penalty corner, deflecting a shot by Lisa Wasser past Centofanti and into the net, tying the game at one. Javelet's second tally also came off a penalty corner, as she scored from just in front of the Husky net.
Just over two minutes after her second tally, Javelet registered her second hat trick in a week by scoring an unassisted insurance goal at the 57:43 mark.
Centofanti played well for Northeastern in a losing effort, making a career-high 10 saves on 13 shots. For Louisville, Heller was only called upon to make two saves on three NU shots.
With the loss, Northeastern has lost three consecutive games for the second time this season. Despite the losing streak, the Huskies will have a week to prepare for two of the team's biggest games of the year next weekend, when the team travels to face nationally-ranked conference foes Old Dominion and William & Mary on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
