The NU field hockey team almost pulled off a conference upset on Saturday afternoon, falling in overtime to No. 3 Old Dominion by a score of 3-2 at Foreman Field in Norfolk, Va.
Northeastern came out of the gate strong, scoring in the game's first 10 minutes. Sophomore Rachel Wilkes scored her second goal of the season at the 10:04 mark, taking a rebound of a penalty corner shot and putting it past ODU goaltender Kelly Driscoll.
The Lady Monarchs scored two goals towards the end of the first half to regain the lead heading into intermission. Caroline Nichols scored off a penalty corner to draw the teams even at the 28:22 mark, and Dana Sensenig took a pass from Denise Admiraal and put it past Husky junior goaltender Liz Centofanti to account for the 2-1 score after 35 minutes.
Old Dominion controlled play for much of the second half, but the Huskies used another late goal to send the game into overtime. Following a thwarted ODU penalty corner, the Huskies drove up the field and junior Harriet Hoyer finally beat out the Lady Monarch defenders to score her third goal of the season with 1:31 remaining in regulation.
For the second consecutive overtime game, however, the Huskies could not convert that last-minute tally into extra-time success. ODU took the only two shots of overtime, with Admiraal scoring the game-winner 2:59 into overtime.
Old Dominion dominated on the stat sheet, holding decisive advantages in shots (13-5) and penalty corners (12-3), and yet the Huskies became only the third team all season to score more than one goal in a game against the Lady Monarchs.
Centofanti made six saves in a losing effort, while Driscoll, who had only allowed 10 goals in 16 games coming into today, made three saves in the victory.
With the team's conference record now below .500, the team faces a must-win situation tomorrow afternoon when the team faces off with William & Mary at 2 pm.
