| James Madison's Meghan Bain scored on a breakaway 7:19 into overtime to give JMU a 2-1 win over Northeastern on Senior Day at Sweeney Field. With the victory, the Dukes clinch the second seed in the upcoming CAA Tournament, while the Huskies still finish as the fourth seed due to a tiebreaker over William & Mary.
The Huskies came out strong in the opening half, holding a 5-1 edge in penalty corners over the Dukes. The team's only goal of the game came off a penalty corner, as senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff scored off a penalty corner play. The assist on the goal went to classmate Natalie Singelais.
The second half saw fewer opportunities, as the teams combined to put only two shots on net. One of those shots, however, came from JMU's Baillie Versfeld, who beat NU junior goaltender Liz Centofanti to tie the game at one. Off a penalty corner, Versfeld dished to Maureen Klingler, who then gave the ball back to Versfeld for the goal.
The game remained scoreless for the final 18:33 of regulation, sending Northeastern into its second consecutive overtime game and third in four games.
James Madison had the only two good scoring opportunties of the extra frame, the first coming just over one minute into overtime as Centofanti made a diving stop on a shot by Lauren Wells. At the 77:19 mark, however, Centofanti could not stop JMU's leading scorer Meghan Bain as she ran in on a breakaway and deked by Centofanti, allowing her to deposit the game-winner.
Both Centofanti and JMU's Kelsey Cutchins made three saves in net, as the teams waged a defensive struggle. For the game, the visitors held a slight 12-9 shot advantage, while NU led in penalty corners, 11-5.
With the loss, NU finishes the regular season with a conference mark of 4-4, which ties the Huskies with William & Mary for fourth place. Due to the Huskies' 1-0 win over the Tribe on Oct. 22, however, Northeastern will take fourth place in the conference and will get a home game in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament. The Huskies and Tribe will meet Wednesday at Sweeney Field, with the time to be determined.
