| In their last game on the home field, senior co-captains Whitney Shean and Sarah Eckhoff made their final contest a memorable one. Shean scored twice and Eckhoff tallied one goal as the Huskies scored four first-half goals in cruising to a 4-1 victory over William & Mary in a CAA quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday evening at Sweeney Field.
The Huskies came out very strong in the opening half, with Shean providing the team with most of its offense. At the 5:43 mark, the Waltham, MA, native took a long cross-field pass from freshman Suzanne Hazelzet and, with the last defender left behind, redirected the ball into the net for her fifth goal of the season. Just over seven minutes later, Shean recorded her first multi-goal game of the season after taking passes from sophomores Ashley Bascetta and Rachel Wilkes. Bascetta took the ball from the right side and fed in front to Wilkes, who found Shean alone on the left post for the goal.
Eckhoff got the Huskies' next goal, taking a direct penalty corner from junior Ashley Webber and rocketing the ball off of Tribe goaltender Gwen Hunter and into the net. Junior Stephanie Casper increased her team-leading goal total to 10 at the 25:56 mark, barely getting a stick on a long shot by Webber and deflecting it past Hunter to make it 4-0 headed into the half.
In the opening half, the Huskies controlled play, holding a 12-2 edge in shots and a 4-0 penalty corner advantage in the first 35 minutes. The four first-half goals also marked the team's highest first-half output of the season, besting the team's three goals scored on Sept. 16 against Massachusetts.
In the second half, the potent Husky offense seemed to relax, allowing the Tribe to assert control for the final 20 minutes of play. Wilkes took the Huskies' only shot of the second half at the 48:02 mark, but Tribe goaltender Kristen Gillis, who replaced Hunter at halftime, made the stop.
William & Mary, meanwhile, put pressure on the Northeastern defense. The Tribe outshot Northeastern 7-1 in the second half, and scored the only goal of the half at the 54:52 mark when junior Kim Hedley corralled a rebound and put it past NU junior goaltender Liz Centofanti. In the half, Centofanti was forced to make five saves after having to make only one in the opening 35 minutes.
With the victory, the Huskies advance to the CAA semifinals, which will take place Saturday at noon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in Virginia Beach, Va. Northeastern will take on top-seeded and national No. 3 Old Dominion, who defeated the Huskies in last year's championship game and also dealt Northeastern a 3-2 overtime loss on Oct. 21 of this season.
