Northeastern Bascetta and Hazelzet named to All-Northeast region First Team

Bascetta and Hazelzet named to All-Northeast region First Team

Junior Ashley Bascetta and sophomore Suzanne Hazelzet were named to the Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Field Hockey First team on Wednesday. Both started in all 21 games for the Huskies this season and shared the team-lead with 13 points. Northeastern University finished its 2007 season with an overall record of 9-12, going 4-4 in conference play.

Bascetta, a Granby, Conn., native, served as assistant captain and led the team with six goals and 48 shots. She scored the game-winning goal in the final regular season match against Virginia Commonwealth University that clinched a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth for Northeastern. In the league quarterfinal match against Towson University, Bascetta posted two goals and assisted on the game-winner, sending the Huskies to the semifinal match. Bascetta was named to the All-CAA Second Team.

Hazelzet is from Rotterdam, Netherlands and earned a career season-high five goals and three assists for 13 points this season. On Oct. 21, Hazelzet posted a seven-point game, scoring three goals and adding an assist, in Northeastern’s 7-1 win over Hofstra. She also earned two assists in Northeastern’s league quarterfinal game, helping the team advance to the semifinal. This season Hazelzet has been named CAA Player of the Week, was selected to the All-CAA First Team and was recognized as the CAA Defensive Player of the Year, the first Northeastern player to receive the award.
