The Huskies dropped the first game of the Terrapin Invitational Tournament to American University by a tight score of 1-0 on in Colleg Park, Md.
Northeastern played well against the No. 12 Eagles, and held AU to a scoreless tie heading into the final minute of the game. Then, with less than five seconds remaining in regulation, the Eagles were awarded a penalty corner that sophomore forward Savannah Graybill converted into her third goal of the season, and AU walked away with the 1-0 victory. American is now a perfect 5-0 on the season, while the Huskies fell to 1-2.
The Huskies played a strong game against the nationally ranked Eagles, with five Huskies getting at least one shot on goal, included two for last weekend's hero, Harriet Hoyer. Goaltender Liz Centofanti registered seven saves on the afternoon.
"The team played exceptional defense against a team ranked No. 12 in the country but we were unable to capitalize on our attack," said Huskies Head Coach Cheryl Murtagh.
This marks the first time the Huskies have been out-shot by an opponent this season, and it's also their first game ever played against American.
The Huskies wrap up their Terrapin Invitational play by facing defending National Champions Maryland on Sunday Sept.9 at 3:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Maryland's WMUC Sports, but you can listen here.
