The Huskies were defeated by two-time defending National Champions Maryland by a score of 6-0 on Sunday. Northeastern and the Maryland Terrapins were scoreless more than halfway through the first half, but at 20:54, Bri Davies scored the first goal of the game and that was all Maryland would need.
The "Terps" added goals from Katie O'Donnell(8), and Janneke Van Leeuwen(5,6) and Susie Rowe(5,6), who both scored twice. Despite the final score, Northeastern goalkeeper Liz Centofanti was once again solid in net, as she managed 16 saves on the day.
"We did not come out and compete with them [Maryland] the way I thought we would, and as we had against American," said Northeastern Head Coach Cheryl Murtagh after Sunday's game. "We allowed them too many opportunities down the center of our field and you just can't do that against the No. 1 team in the country. We also had difficulty sustaining an attack and therefore played on our heels most of the game."
Although it was a tough game for the Huskies, Murtagh believes that playing top notch competition can only be beneficial in the long run. "Competing against top teams in the country has given us a guideline for the pace of play that we need to execute," she says. "Our defense was very strong versus American. We just need a boost in our offense"
The game wrapped up the Huskies participation in the Terrapin Invitational. They'll return to action on Wed. Sept. 12 when they face Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at 3:30 p.m.
