The field hockey team defeated Providence College on Wednesday by a score of 1-0. Freshman Emma Boggio provided the Huskies with the offense, as she posted her first collegiate goal. Meanwhile, Northeastern goalkeeper Liz Centofanti registered three saves en route to her first shutout of the season.
Boggio's game-winning goal came at 20:43 in the first, as she caught a deflection and put it past Providence goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain. Senior Stephanie Casper, who last season led Northeastern in points (25), was credited with her first assist of the 2007 campaign.
The goal would prove to be all Northeastern needed. The Huskies were in control of the game and were able to hold the Friars scoreless in a very solid outing. The Huskies out-shot Providence 8-6 and also held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 3-4 on the season. In addition, the win snaps the Friars' five-game winning streak. The Friars had also previously held opponents scoreless for the last four games. Northeastern is now 15-5-2 all-time against Providence.
The Huskies return to action as they open conference play against William & Mary on Friday at 7 p.m. in Williamsburg, Va.
