The field hockey team defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats by a score of 2-1 on Sunday at Sweeney Field. Senior Ashley Webber scored Northeastern’s two goals, while goalkeeper Liz Centofanti made 12 saves on the afternoon.
The scoring got underway at 9:19 in the first when Webber beat UNH goalkeeper Margaux Shute with help from Montana Hewlett. New Hampshire answered back at 30:20 after the Wildcats were awarded a penalty corner. Although the team did not score directly from the corner, Leah Boody was able to get the rebound from Centofanti’s initial save and put it in the cage for the tying goal.
After that, the game belonged to the defense. Both teams got outstanding performances from their defense and goalkeepers to keep the score tied at the end of regulation, despite the many scoring opportunities created by both offenses.
The play of the day came late in the first overtime. New Hampshire’s Megan Shea had possession of the ball and moved it into the Huskies’ defensive zone. Centofanti came forward in an attempt to block and Shea was able to maneuver around her. It looked as though Shea was in the clear for an easy goal, but Northeastern’s Stephanie Casper came out of nowhere to make an outstanding defensive save that kept the Huskies’ hopes alive and sent the game into double overtime.
The Huskies were finally able to put the exclamation point on their most exciting game this season. In the 88th minute of play, Webber, who had earlier scored her second goal of the season, displayed great skill as she simply beat Shute in the circle for the unassisted game-winning goal.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-6 on the season and 23-13-1 all-time against New Hampshire. The team resumes action on Wednesday when it hosts the Harvard Crimson at 4 p.m., at Sweeney Field.
