| 2007 Schedule/Results Northeastern 2, Delaware 1
On Friday the field hockey team defeated No. 18 Delaware in a conference game by a score of 2-1. Scoring the game-winner for the Huskies was freshman Emma Boggio. Sophomore Suzanne Hazelzet also scored for the Huskies, who improve to 5-7 on the season (1-2 CAA) with Friday's win. The first half was as tight as a game could be. Northeastern put a lot of pressure on the Blue Hens early on, but the Delaware defense shut down scoring opportunities with blocks and excellent defensive plays. Meanwhile, the Husky defense was just as strong, as was the goaltending. At 11:07, Northeastern goalkeeper Liz Centofanti made a diving stop against Amanda Warrington to keep the game scoreless. Stellar defensive plays were also made by Suzanne Hazelzet, who stepped up during a defensive lapse that left Northeastern vulnerable to a breakaway. Later on in the half, assistant captain Jillian Wilkes battled Delaware's leading point scorer, Casey Howard, and was able to take the ball and put the Huskies back in possession. Northeastern out-shot Delaware 5-4 in the first half, while both teams had one corner. The half ended in a scoreless tie. For the secon half, the Huskies came out of the gate charging. They held possession for the first five minutes, keeping the pressure on the Blue Hens' defense. The team was awarded three quick penalty corners, the last of which helped the Huskies get on the board. The corner, taken by senior Ashley Webber, was sent right to senior Stephanie Casper who moved up closer to the cage and fired a quick shot that was deflected by Delaware goalkeeper Nikki Rhoades. Sophomore Suzanne Hazelzet had crashed the net and was there to take the rebound and fired it past Rhoades for her first goal of the season, putting the Huskies on top 1-0. Delaware came storming back after the Northeastern goal, and were able to keep the ball in the Huskies' defensive zone. In the 52nd minute of play, sophomore Tori Karsten was finally able to break through the strong Husky defense and beat Centofanti, tieing the score and getting Delaware on the board with just under 20 minutes to play. From thereon out, the teams' defenses stole the show as no team wanted to relinquish another goal. Finally, Northeastern was able to produce an offensive push that ended up in the game-winner for the Huskies. Webber had control of the ball down in the Delaware end, and once inside the circle, made a crisp pass to freshman Emma Boggio who put it away to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead that they would not give up. The goal was Boggio's second career tally and game-winner. She also had the winning score in the Huskies' 1-0 win at Providence on Sept. 19. For the remainder of the game, the Blue Hens charged the Huskies' end, recording seven shots, but Northeastern did everything they could to keep Delaware from scoring again. Delaware's Jackie Tait was close to a breakaway but junior Ashley Bascetta fought hard to take away the ball late in the game. Stephanie Casper also played a tremendous game, getting herself into the right spots for the Huskies, appearing every time her team was in need of some defensive help. Northeastern was out-shot 7-4 in the second half but held on for the win. The game was arguably the best-played game for the Huskies this season. The Huskies now stand at 5-7 on the season (1-2 CAA), while Delaware falls to 9-4 (2-3 CAA). Northeastern is now 13-5 all time againt the Blue Hens, and 5-2 in the last seven meetings. Northeastern takes the field again on Sunday afternoon, as the team hosts the Towson Tigers for another CAA showdown at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m.
