On Wednesday the Northeastern field hockey team fell to the Huskies of Connectict at Sweeney Field by a score of 3-0. Lizzy Peijs scored two goals for No. 6 Connecticut, while Lindsey Leck registered two assists on the afternoon. Northeastern drops to 6-8 on the season while Connecticut earned its 13th win of the year.
The first half started off strongly for both sides, as they played to scoreless tie through the first 27 minutes of play. Then as the ball was in Northeastern's defensive end, Leck found Katie Semanoff who put it past NU goalie Liz Centofanti for her fifth goal of the season, giving Connecticut a 1-0 lead that the team would not relinquish. Before the end of the first half, the Big East's leading scorer Peijs notched an unassisted goal. She had taken a shot that was blocked by Centofanti but grabbed the rebound and put it in the cage for her 12th goal of the season, her first of two on the day.
Northeastern continued to fight into the second half playing strong defense against the nationally-ranked Connecticut. The defense was solid, intercepting a number of passes, while Centofanti managed seven stops, including a sprawling save against Laurn Aird.
But heading into the 54th minute, UConn was awarded a penalty corner. Peijs was there to accept the pass from Leck, took two steps and fired a one-timer right into the lower left hand corner of the cage for her second tally of the day, her 13th overall. The goal put the finishing touches on the game for Connecticut.
Up next, Northeastern will host No. 12 Boston College at Sweeney Field Saturday at 1 p.m.
