Suzanne Hazelzet recorded her first career hat trick on Sunday as the Huskies rolled to a 7-1 win over conference foe Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. Hazelzet also earned an assist on one of Meg Sweeney's two goals to earn seven points in the game. With the win, the Huskies improve to 7-10 (3-3 CAA).
The Huskies got on the board first in the game. The team was awarded a penalty shot and Sweeney deflected in after a scramble near the cage, with Hazelzet assisting. Hofstra had an answer about midway through the half when Pemba Ramdoo shot a one timer from Brit Blankmeyer to tie the score at one apiece. Hazelzet would score again before the end of the half on a penalty stroke and give the Huskies a 2-1 lead at the end of the half.
The Huskies added five more in the second half. At 39:26 Hazelzet gained possession of the ball and moved it down to the front of Hofstra's net and shot from mid circle, scoring the third Husky goal of the day. Three minutes laster, Northeastern was awarded another penalty stroke, on which Hazelzet earned her hat trick.
A few minutes later, Sweeney grabbed a loose ball during a scramble and shot it into the right side of the net to make the score 5-1 in favor of the Huskies.
In the final minutes of the second half, Harriet Hoyer and Ashley Bascetta rounded out the scoring for the Huskies as they both had unassisted goals. The goals mark Hoyers' fourth of the season and Bascetta's third.
The Huskies come home for the last two games of the season,both of which are conference games. They'll host No. 8 James Madison at Sweeney Field on Friday at 2 p.m., and then Virginia Commonwealth at 2 p.m., on Sunday.
