On Friday the field hockey team hung tough against No. 8 James Madison but could not overcome two first half goals and lost by a final score of 3-0. With the loss, the Huskies fall to 7-11 and 3-4 in conference play on the season.
Early on in the first half, it was all Huskies. They planted themselves down in the JMU end and put the pressure on. The team had two penalty corners early but the Dukes' defense was strong and blocked the resulting shots, including two bullets from Stephanie Casper.
Northeastern goalie Liz Centofanti also made a few spectacular saves, inlucing a sliding, diving play to rob Lauren Walls of a goal.
James Madison got on the board in the final minutes of the first when the Dukes made an offensive push with Melissa Stefaniak as the catalyst. She passed the ball to Lauren Walls who had positioned herself right in front of the net and put the ball past Centofanti for the eventual game-winner for the Dukes.
James Madison followed it up with another goal three minutes later when Randi Segear caught the rebound from a shot she had taken and put it past Centofanti for the second Duke goal of the game.
To start the second half, James Madison put the pressure back on offensively. Melissa Stefaniak maneuvered around Husky defensemen and went one-on-one with Centofanti, who came out and dove, blocking Stefaniak's momentum.
The Huskies would not be able to hold off James Madison forever, and the Dukes put the finishing touches on the game when Meghan Bain scored, thanks to an Ashley Walls assist to the right side of the net, making it 3-0 Dukes.
James Madison improves to 16-3 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday when they host Virginia Commonwealth at Sweeney Field at 2 p.m. The game is the final of the regular season for the Huskies.
