The Huskies improved to 6-4 with a 3-2 win over the Stanford Cardinal Saturday at Sweeney Field.

Northeastern struck first when Ashley Bascetta pounced on a loose ball in front of the Stanford goal and buried it in the back of the net to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

Stanford answered back 16:31 into the period when Jennifer Luther redirected a Hillary Braun shot past NU goalkeeper Colleen Duffy.

The game remained tied until late in the first half when Pam Aldridge collected a pass in the midfield and beat a Stanford defender to create a breakaway opportunity. Stanford goalkeeper Alessandra Moss tripped Aldridge up before she could get a shot off, and Aldridge was awarded a penalty stroke. Aldridge sent a shot to the right side of the cage, beating Moss to give the Huskies the lead again.

Stanford evened the game again early in the second half, off a strike from leading scorer Midori Uehara.

As the clock approached 10:00, Northeastern earned a penalty corner. Senior co-captain Jillian Wilkes sent the ball in to Anne-Reike Stuhlmann, and cut to the left post. Stuhlmann controlled the ball and set up Ashley Bascetta, who fired the ball to the left post. Bascetta's pass found a wide open Wilkes, who redirected the ball into the net to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.

The Huskies preserved the lead thanks to some stellar defensive play down the stretch. Stanford had what appeared to be a breakway opportunity after Stuhlmann and Wilkes failed to snuff out the cardinal attack, but Bridget Griffin came streaking in from the left side to break up the play. Later, with 6:08 left to play, Wilkes took the ball off the stick of a Stanford attacker, ending another Cardinal threat.

The NU win came before a large crowd which included many former NU field hockey players, as the program celebrated its annual Alumnae Day at Sweeney Field.

The Huskies travel to New Hampshire Oct. 5, then play at Harvard Oct. 8, and at Delaware for a conference game on Oct. 10.
