Huskies head coach Cheryl Murtagh won her 300th career game and Northeastern improved to 7-6 with a 2-0 win over Delaware at the Blue Hens' Rullo Field Friday. In 21 seasons at Northeastern, Murtagh is 300-148-10.
Murtagh came to Northeastern in 1988, and in her 20 years at the helm, Northeastern field hockey has enjoyed success at both the conference and national level. Murtagh captured 10 America East titles in 15 seasons in the conference, and has led the Huskies to 14 NCAA tournament appearances. Only five coaches have made more appearances in the tournament. In those 14 appearances, Murtagh has lead Northeastern to the Final Four three times, in 1988, 1995 and 1996.
Murtagh has been recognized for her excellent coaching by her peers both in the conference and across the country. She was named America East Coach of the Year in 1990, '92, '97, 2001, '02 and '03, and NFHCA Northeast Coach of the Year in 1995, '96, '97, 2001 '02, '03, and '04.
Murtagh won her 100th game Nov. 6, 1994, and secured her 200th victory Oct. 14, 2001. She ranks ninth all-time in wins among those who have coached exclusively at the division I level, and is the winningest field hockey coach and winningest female coach in Northeastern history.
The Huskies got on the board 15 minutes into the first half when Pam Aldridge sent a crossing pass in front of the Delaware goal. Annie Clayman got on the other end of the Aldridge pass, and scored her second goal of the season to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Aldridge extended the Huskies' lead in the second half off a penalty corner. Jillian Wilkes' entry pass was settled by Anne-Reike Stuhlmann, and ALdridge's shot found the back of the cage to put Northeastern up by 2.
After allowing four goals against Harvard Oct. 8, Colleen Duffy turned in a strong performance, making six saves and earning her fourth sutout of the season.
The win lifts Northeastern to 1-2 in CAA play. They continue their conference slate sunday when they take on Towson.
