Northeastern University field hockey head coach Cheryl Murtagh has announced the Huskies’ incoming class for the 2008 season. Forwards Carolyn Malloy and Sam Roach, midfielders Kaela Barker, Olivia Bass and Beth Cobby, and goalkeeper Lizzie Priest have signed National Letters of Intent to play for Northeastern and will join the Huskies in the fall.

Barker (North Vancouver, British Columbia) comes to Northeastern from Sutherland Secondary School where she played for five seasons, alongside fellow recruit Lizzie Priest. Barker led Sutherland in scoring for her final two seasons as the team won consecutive North Shore Division I Championships. She is a three-time team captain, four-time North Shore Athletic Assocation First Team All-Star and a four-time Sutherland Female Athlete of the Year. She was also invited to the Canadian National Under-23 camp and was selected to the British Columbia Provincial team, helping B.C. to a gold medal at the Canada Summer Games in 2007.

Bass (Amherst, Mass.) previously played for Amherst Regional High School for four seasons with Sam Roach, and was elected captain as a senior. As a midfielder she was the third on the team in scoring. She is a three-time Daily Hampshire Gazette All-Star, Division I All-Star and a participant in the USA Field Hockey Futures Program.

Cobby (Voorhees, N.J.) comes to NU after a successful run at Eastern Regional High School where she helped her team win the New Jersey State Championship in all four years of her play, including an undefeated streak that stretched for two years. Cobby is a All-Olympic Conference First Team All-Star and a Star Ledger All-State team member. In 2006 led her team to the first ever Tournament of Champions title.

Malloy (Windham, N.H.) broke Salem High School’s record for goals in a season, scoring 30 (70 points overall) to lead Salem to an undefeated season and the 2007 New Hampshire State title as its captain. Malloy is a three-time team MVP, 2007 NFHCA All-American, New Hampshire Field Hockey Coaches Association Field Hockey Player of the Year, New Hampshire Union Leader All-State and Player of the Year, Eagle Tribune All-State and Most Valuable Player and Varsity Magazine 2007 Top Field Hockey Player.

Priest (North Vancouver, British Columbia) captained her Sutherland team to consecutive Division I North titles alongside Kaela Barker. For two straight seasons, Priest led the league in goals against average, allowing only four goals in conference play over the span of two years. She is a member of team British Columbia and was selected as the team’s Most Valuable Player. In addition, Priest was invited to the Canadian National Development Camp in 2008.

Roach (Leverett, MA) served as captain for her final two seasons at Amherst Regional alongside Olivia Bass, leading the team in scoring for both years. She is a Springfield Republican All-Scholastic, two-time Daily Hampshire Gazette All-Star, and a four-year participant in the USA Futures Program. She was also selected as a 2007 Euro Tour Elite Team member.

“I am very excited about this class,” says Murtagh. “We have a great balance of talent from all over, and I am looking for this class to contribute immediately. Our team will be young so they will play significant roles for us this season.”

The Northeastern field hockey team went 9-12 in 2007, finishing the Colonial Athletic Association regular season fourth in the conference with a 4-4 record. The Huskies defeated Towson in the quarterfinals of the CAA Tournament before falling to top-seeded Old Dominion in the semifinals of the tournament. The team’s 2008 schedule is customarily challenging, featuring five conference champions and six NCAA Tournament teams.
