The defense was the difference for the Huskies, as they limited the Blue Hens to just 56 yards of total offense. Delaware carried the ball 42 times for zero net yards. The 56 yards of total offense set a new mark for futility for Delaware in the long history of its powerful program. NU has never held a Yankee Conference/Atlantic 10 team to fewer total yards or fewer rushing yards since joining the league in 1993.
Several players on defense had standout performances. Senior captain T.J. Hill (Paterson, N.J.) intercepted two passes and blocked a field goal try. Junior Art Smith (Willingboro, N.J.) picked up a fumble in the first half and returned it 53 yards for a touchdown. Freshman Liam Ezekiel (Arlington, Mass.) made 11 tackles, two for a loss, and deflected a pair of passes in his debut. The D also tackled and forced a fumble by the Blue Hen punter, which set up a 7-yard touchdown rush by L.J. McKanas (Saugus, Mass.) in the fourth quarter.
McKanas carried the Northeastern offense, rushing for 161 yards on 36 carries and two scores. Logan Galli (Carlsbad, Calif.) went the whole way at quarterback, throwing for 111 yards on 14 of 29 passing.
The two teams combined for over 800 yards of punts on 21 attempts. For NU, Tyler Grogan (Foxboro, Mass.) punted 10 times for 324 yards and Chris Steiner punted 11 times for 505 yards for the Blue Hens.
The Huskies scored first at 1:50 of the first quarter when Delaware's Sam Postlewait's errant pitch to Butch Patrick was scooped up by NU's Smith and returned for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt was blocked.
Delaware took the lead in the second quarter. UD's Sidney Haugabrook picked off a Galli pass and returned it to the 2-yard line. The Husky defense stopped rushes on first, second and third downs, but Butter Pressey scored on a toss to the left on fourth down. The kick was good for a 7-6 Blue Hen lead at 9:23 of the second quarter.
The score remained 7-6 Delaware until the fourth quarter. The Huskies drove 63 yards on six plays, capped off by a 30-yard rush by McKanas around the right end for the score. Galli threw a pass to Michael Mack (Nyack, N.Y.) for the two-point conversion and a 14-7 lead.
On the first play of Delaware's next possession, Hill intercepted Postlewait's pass at the Delaware 48 and returned it 26 yards to the 22-yard line. The Huskies, however, failed to capitalize on the turnover as NU turned the ball over on downs.
Delaware couldn't move the ball and set up to punt. But a bad snap on the punt resulted in a fumble that was recovered by NU's Gavin Potter (Doylestown, Pa.) on the Delaware seven. McKanas then scored on a seven-yard rush on the next play. Nate Mullaugh's extra-point attempt missed wide right.
It was Northeastern's first game since a defeat at Villanova Sept. 8.
