Undefeated Harvard scored 27 unanswered points to turn a tie game into a 41-14 win Saturday afternoon in front of 11,809 fans at Harvard Stadium.
The Crimson (5-0, 2-0 Ivy) took a 21-14 lead with 3:54 showing on the clock when quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick lofted a pass in right corner of the end zone to Brian Edwards, who fought off two defenders to come down with the ball. The 13-yard touchdown capped a 13-play, 67-yard drive.
The end of the half included a wild sequence, starting when EJ Jackson picked off his second pass of the day, with 34 seconds left. He returned the ball to the Crimson 49, but Northeastern (3-3, 2-1 A10) was flagged for a 15-yard personal foul penalty.
Quintin Mitchell caught a pass on the first play after the interception, but he was stripped of the ball, and Harvard recovered at the NU 48. Another personal foul call gave Harvard the ball at the 32 with 16 seconds left. A 12-yard completion moved the Crimson to the 21 with eight seconds left, and Matt Schindel kicked a 38-yard field goal to give Harvard a 24-14 advantage at the break.
Down only 10 at the half and receiving the second-half kickoff, Northeastern looked to be in good shape. However, it lost its second fumble of the game when quarterback Shawn Brady couldn’t handle a snap, and linebacker Matt Thomas fell on it at the Husky 43. A 31-yard reverse to Edwards and an 11-yard quarterback draw by Fitzpatrick put the ball at the 1. From there, Clifton Dawson dove over the pile to increase the margin to 31-14.
Shane Hopkins took the ensuing kickoff and, just as he did at William & Mary, ran through a wall of defenders to bring the ball back to the Harvard 48. Believing it needed seven and not three to get back in the game, the Huskies went for it on a fourth-and-two from the Harvard 16, but Brady’s pass for Cory Parks in the end zone was overthrown, and Harvard took over on downs.
The Crimson continued the offensive clinic as it embarked on a 12-play, 84-yard drive, culminating in a two-yard plunge by Fitzpatrick, upping the lead to 38-14 with 4:12 to go in the third.
Another fumbled snap by Brady, this time in a shotgum formation, gave the Crimson possession at the NU 20, but it had to settle for a 24-yard Matt Schindel field goal.
After both teams exchanged punts to start the game, Harvard got good field position, starting a drive on its own 47. The Crimson moved the ball down to the Northeastern 1. Dawson was stuffed at the goal line on two straight plays. On third down, Fitzpatrick found tight end Jason O’Neill on a play-action pass, and Harvard went up 7-0.
Northeastern responded with a six-play, 71-yard scoring drive. With the ball at the Harvard 19, Brady completed a quick slant to Mitchell. He cut back outside and beat a trio of Crimson defenders to the end zone to knot the game at 7-7. Mitchell was Northeastern's leading receiver with six receptions for 74 yards.
Harvard came right back, marching 71 yards in 12 plays and scoring on a seven-yard run by Dawson with 13:30 left in the half.
The Huskies’ next drive included a highlight-reel rush by James West. He ran wide left, realized he had nowhere to go, reversed field, and rumbled 25 yards. Northeastern, however, was stopped and forced to punt. West recorded his first 100-yard day in a Husky uniform, rushing for 107 yards on 18 carries.
On a second down play from his own 31, Fitzpatrick tried to hit one of his receivers on a slant pattern, but Jackson jumped the route and picked off the pass, bringing it back to the Crimson 28.
Four plays later, with the ball at the Harvard 15, Brady dropped back to pass, found no one open, and took off for the end zone. He dove at the two and put the ball just inside the pile-on to even the score at 14-14 with 8:08 remaining in the quarter. The score extends the Huskies’ streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to 23 games.
Liam Ezekiel registered a game-high 17 tackles (11 solo). Matt Campopiano tied for second on the team with six stops, and also forced two fumbles.
It is the Huskies’ worst loss since a 42-0 defeat at Delaware on Sept. 30, 2000, their worst-ever non-conference loss since they began Atlantic 10 play in 1993, and the most lopsided outcome in the eight-game series with the Crimson. Harvard’s 41 points are the most by a Husky opponent since Hofstra scored 45 in a 45-21 win Sept. 1, 2001.
The Huskies try to get back on track next Saturday when they venture to Orono to take on Maine at 2 p.m.
