| Sophomore Maurice Murray rushed for a career-high 151 yards and two touchdowns, while junior Jamil Young recorded a forced fumble and recovery, as well as a crucial interception, as Northeastern stopped a 28-point third quarter comeback by Towson to win 56-41 in Atlantic 10 football action on Saturday afternoon at Parsons Field.
The two teams combined for 1067 total yards and set a Northeastern record for most total points scored in a football game (97). The previous record was 87 total points versus Colgate on Nov. 12, 1977. Also broken was the NU all-time scoring record, as senior Miro Kesic kicked for 12 points to surpass Dave Klemic’s record of 262 career points set in 2000. Kesic has now recorded 272 points throughout his four-year Northeastern career.
The Huskies (1-3, 1-1 A-10) picked up their first win of the season, while the Tigers fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in Atlantic 10 play.
Trailing 41-7 midway through the third quarter, Towson put together 28 unanswered points to close the Husky lead to just seven. Redshirt freshman quarterback Sean Shaefer tried to reduce the lead to one as he attempted to hit a Tiger receiver in the endzone, but was intercepted by Young.
Redshirt freshman John Sperrazza, making his first collegitate start, and senior Cory Parks would stop the bleeding with a 32-yard touchdown reception to build the Husky lead to 49-35. Parks finished the day with 205 receiving yards, to go with a pair of touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing.
The momentum continued to build for Northeastern on the next possession, as Tiger junior Andrae Brown fumbled deep in Towson’s own territory and freshman Cornelius Bunch fell on the ball to regain possession for the Huskies. Six seconds later, sophomore Maurice Murray crossed the goal line with a six-yard score, his second touchdown of the afternoon, to give Northeastern a 56-35 advantage.
Coming out of the half with a 34-7 lead, Northeastern added seven points on a one-yard touchdown run by senior Keith Kent, the first of his career. Sperrazza put the Huskies in position to score as he avoided the Tiger pressure and hit junior Bill Monan with a 36-yard completion to move into Tiger territory. However, Towson answered right back as Shaefer connected with Brown on a 71-yard score just :21 seconds later.
The Tigers continuted to close the gap as junior Jared White had his punt blocked by freshman Marcus Lee and was recovered by senior Josh Corle at the Husky 15.Williams notched the touchdown with a nine-yard rush for Towson.
On Towson’s next possession, Shaefer hit Brown once more, this time a 30-yarder, that Brown carried into the endzone for the Tigers’ third straight unaswered score.
The Towson momentum continued as sophomore T.J. Foley and junior Carlos Allen sacked Sperrazza on a fourth down situation, taking over on their own 40 yard line. The very next play, Shaefer hit Brown on a 60-yarder for his fourth passing TD of the game, reducing the Husky lead to 41-35.
Brown recorded his fifth touchdown of the afternoon with 4:22 remaining in the game on a five-yard reception to account for the final score.
The Huskies jumped to an early 7-0 lead, as Sperrazza led the Husky charge 75 yards for the score. On the first play from scrimage, Sperrazza hit senior Cory Parks with a 35-yard strike and again with a 17-yard completion to put the Huskies in scoring position. Sperrazza then found junior Marc Thomas in the endzone for an eight-yard touchdown, Thomas’ first of the season and the first of the young quarterback’s career.
Northeastern built its lead to 14-0 at 7:36 in the first quarter, as Young forced a Tiger fumble and recovered the ball at the Towson 38. Sperrazza struck again, as he hit senior Anthony Riley in the flat, who moved the ball 20 yards down the sideline for his first score of the season.
Senior Miro Kesic finished the scoring in the first quarter with a 41-yard field goal with 1:33 remaining to break Klemic’s record.
Kesic struck again at 13:01 in the second quarter, this time on a 20-yard attempt,to give the Huskies a 20-0 advantage. The possession began with junior Lamar Gay’s first-career interception at the close of the first quarter.
Schaefer then put the Tigers on the board with 8:59 to play in the second quarter with an eight-yard pass to junior Andrae Brown. The drive consisted of nine plays, covering 80 yards and a span of 4:02.
Sophomore Maurice Murray extended the Huskies’ streak of consecutive games with a rushing touchdown to 32 straight games. Murray converted a three-yard run with his fifth rushing score of the season. The touchdown built Northeastern’s lead to 27-7 with 5:10 in the second.
Heading into the half, the Huskies gained a second life, as a 50-yard field goal attempt by Kesic was waved dead on a personal foul penalty against Towson. With the ball on the 18 and less than a minute remaining, Sperrazza handed off to redshirt freshman Alex Broomfield who then handed to Parks on the end-around. Parks carried the ball into the endzone for his first score of the season and a 34-7 Husky lead at the half.
Sperrazza completed 17 of 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns on the afternoon, including 11 of 18 for 188 yards in the first half. Shaefer completed 21 of 31 passes for 383 yards and five touchdowns, while Brown caught nine passes for 222 yards and five scores.
Young paced the Huskies defensively, as they recovered a pair of fumbles and recorded two interceptions on the day. Senior EJ Jackson, freshman Craig Kenney and Bunch each recorded six total tackles. Four Tigers recorded seven total tackles and sophomore TJ Foley notched two sacks for Towson.
The Huskies head into their bye week, before they travel to Amherst to take on Massachusetts in an Atlantic 10 matchup on Oct. 8 at 1 p.m., while Towson returns home next Saturday as it hosts Delaware at 6 p.m. in an A-10 contest.
